Former Indian Foreign Secretary Vinay Mohan Kwatra (Retd. IFS: 1988) has been nominated as the next Indian Ambassador to the United States. India has officially communicated Kwatra’s nomination to the US. While the Ministry of External Affairs has not yet released a statement on the development, an official announcement is expected once formalities in the US are completed.
The post has been vacant for the past six months since Taranjit Singh Sandhu (IFS:1988) retired in January.
Kwatra ended his term as the Foreign Secretary on July 15 and was succeeded by Vikram Misri (IFS:1989). Kwatra wast apppointed to the post of Foreign Secretary in April 2022.
Previously, Kwatra has served in China, the US, in PM Modi’s office and as India’s envoy to France before his tenure as the top bureaucrat in the foreign ministry.
