The Chhattisgarh government has once again appointed retired IPS officer Girdhari Nayak (IPS:1983:CG) as a member of the Human Rights Commission. Mr. Nayak had retired from the position of DG Jail and Home Guards on June 30, 2019. Subsequently, the state government had given him a post-retirement assignment by making him a member of the Human Rights Commission. His initial tenure in this role concluded on November 16, 2022. However, after a nine-month gap, the government has reappointed him as a member of the Human Rights Commission.
Due to his seniority within the commission, Mr. Nayak will assume the role of Chairman. It’s worth noting that there has been no regular Chairman appointed to the commission since the retirement of Justice Rajiv Gupta. The position of Chairman of the Human Rights Commission is typically held by a retired Chief Justice of the High Court. Following Mr. Nayak’s appointment as a member, he assumed the role of Incharge-Chairman of the Commission on November 19, 2020.
The tenure for both the Chairman and members of the Human Rights Commission is typically three years.
