A couple of days after the Supreme Court Collegium refused their separate requests to stay put or relocate to nearby states, the Union government announced the transfers of three High Court Judges on July 15.
They are;
- Justice Gaurang Kanth of Delhi High Court has been transferred to the Calcutta High Court.
- Justice Dinesh Kumar Singh of Allahabad High Court has been transferred to the Kerala High Court.
- Justice Manoj Bajaj of Punjab & Haryana High Court has been transferred to the Allahabad High Court.
Both Justice Kanth and Justice Singh had written separate letters to the Collegium asking for a transfer to a neighbouring state, but Justice Bajaj wanted to stay at Punjab and Haryana High Court. However, the apex court body did not relent. The Collegium headed by Chief Justice of India D. Y. Chandrachud stood firm by its July 5 recommendations to transfer these Judges. In its July 12 resolution, the Collegium reiterated that its proposals to transfer the three Judges were for the better administration of justice.
Justice Kanth, who was elevated from the bar as judge of the Delhi high court in May 2022, had requested transfer to a neighbouring high court, preferably Madhya Pradesh or Rajasthan.
A similar request was forwarded to the collegium by Justice Dinesh Kumar Singh while Justice Manoj Bajaj sought to continue serving at Punjab & Haryana high court.
