The Election Commission has enlisted the assistance of 20 IAS officers hailing from Bihar cadre to serve as observers during the upcoming Assembly elections in five states: Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, Mizoram, Rajasthan, and Telangana.

These selected bureaucrats encompass a range of ranks, spanning from junior officers such as settlement officers to those holding esteemed positions such as special secretary, director, joint secretary, secretary, and principal secretary.

According to reports, the Election Commission communicated with Bihar’s Chief Electoral Officer, H.R. Srinivasa, on September 26, requesting that he ensure the timely release of these 20 designated IAS officers to participate in a crucial meeting and receive essential briefings scheduled to take place at the Constitution Club of India in Delhi on October 6.

In a written correspondence, the Election Commission emphasized that any failure of the called officers to attend the assigned duties would be viewed with utmost seriousness, potentially resulting in disciplinary actions against them. The general administration department has issued a notification instructing the respective IAS officers to comply with the directives of the Election Commission.

These officers, drawn from various services, are deployed as general, police, and expenditure observers within the constituencies scheduled for elections. Their responsibilities extend to monitoring activities during the campaign and election processes, focusing on matters within their jurisdiction, and subsequently submitting comprehensive reports to the Election Commission.
