The new proposal of the UP government to appoint the Director General of Police on its own, instead of sending the panel to the UPSC, has dashed the hopes of many IPS officers of the state, who wished to become the DGP before retirement. After the cabinet decision, the UP government will now prepare a panel of its own and select the DGP, for which the selection committee has been formed.
After this decision, the current acting DGP, Prashant Kumar (IPS:1990:UP), may get a chance to be confirmed as a regular DGP under this new system. If it happens, he will hold the DGP post for 2 years (including the period he has served as acting DGP). In this scenario, he will retire on 31 January 2026 instead of 30 May 2025. It means he will now get eight months more time after the completion of his actual retirement period.
In this way, after Prashant Kumar’s retirement in January 2026, only those officers who retire after July 2026 (As minimum six months of service is a must for selection as DGP) will be considered for selection as the next DGP.
It seals the fates of at least 11 IPS officers who will now retire without becoming DGP. These officers, who are likely to retire without getting a chance to become DGP, are: PV Ramasastri (IPS:1989:UP), Aditya Mishra (IPS:1989:UP), Sandeep Salunke (IPS:1990:UP), Daljit Singh Chaudhary (IPS:1990:UP), Bijaya Kumar Maurya (IPS:1990:UP), M K Bashal (IPS:1990:UP), Tilotama Verma (IPS:1990:UP), Alok Sharma (IPS:1991:UP), Abhay Kumar Prasad (IPS:1991:UP), Dipesh Juneja (IPS:1992:UP) and Neera Rawat (IPS:1992:UP).
Interestingly, when Prashant Kumar had been appointed as acting DGP, he had superseded 16 senior officers and his continuance now will finish the career of 11 more officers.
